Instant Pot Brussel Sprouts. Make the most delicious Brussel Sprouts in the Instant Pot in JUST 4 minutes.

So delicious, so full of flavour and you will never want to cook your Brussel Sprouts any other way once you have tried our Instant Pot Brussel Sprouts.

My Instant Pot Brussel Sprouts are vegan friendly, vegetarian friendly, Paleo friendly and Whole30 friendly.

Love them or loathe them Brussel Sprouts are so quick to cook in the Instant Pot. Just cook them with a small amount of water and they then steam in just 4 minutes for a big bag of them.

Dominic and I are part of the love brigade.

We will fight over the last Brussel Sprouts just like you would over the last roast potatoes and we would be heartbroken if Christmas Dinner or Thanksgiving didn’t involve Instant Pot Brussel Sprouts.

Kyle on the other hand loathes them. Is disgusted at the thought of having to eat Instant Pot Brussel Sprouts and avoids them like they are the plague.

At Christmas it was usually the last thing that we cooked before we served up Christmas Dinner.

We would cook them in some boiling water on the hob, then toss them in salt, pepper and melted butter when cooked.

They were the best!

But there was one problem with our Brussel Sprouts….every time you cook Brussel Sprouts using the boiling method they will lose flavour.

They taste like every bit of flavour has been wiped from it. Plus, from a nutrition point of view, boiling vegetables loses their vitamins and you’re much better off steaming them.

However, if you cook Brussel Sprouts in the Instant Pot it tastes like real Brussel Sprouts and not some mushy tasteless rubbish.

The way we do them is we cook a bag of them at once.

We will reduce the size of the root so that when cooked they are not as hard. Then we will peel off the top layer.

This then stops them from being so gritty from the soil and removes any bad bits in case they have been on the supermarket shelf for a while.

Then we place them in the Instant Pot with a cup of water and let the Instant Pot do all the work for us.

If you haven’t got an Instant Pot yet, then we recommend that you do, they are an amazing kitchen gadget and we cook a whole variety of meals in it.

Then when they are cooked you can serve them however you like your Instant Pot Brussel Sprouts.

We love ours with butter along with some salt and pepper. But if today wasn’t Meatless Monday, I would be shouting at you to add some bacon to the mix.

FAQs

Can I cook brussel sprouts in an Instant Pot? ›

Use Big Brussels in the Instant Pot

Because Brussels sprouts release a bitter, sulfurous compound when overcooked, it's best to cook them under high pressure in an electric pressure cooker for just 1 minute and then finish the cooking using the sauté function.

How long should you steam Brussels sprouts? ›

Put the Brussels sprouts in a steamer basket and season with salt. Set the steamer basket over the boiling water and cook until tender, 8 to 10 minutes depending on the size of the Brussels sprouts. Transfer the sprouts to a plate, sprinkle with black pepper and serve.

How many minutes does it take to cook sprouts? ›

Larger ones can be cut in half. To boil, put into a pan with some salt, cover with boiling water, bring back to the boil and cook, covered, for 5-10 mins. They take 5-10 mins to steam. A sharp knife should easily go through the base then they are done, but with a little resistance.

How long do you cook vegetables in the Instant Pot? ›

Fill steamer basket with prepared potatoes, carrots and green beans. I like to put the potatoes on the bottom. Cover the Instant Pot and secure the lid. Make sure valve is set to “sealing.” Set the manual/pressure cook button to 5 minutes.

Is it better to steam or boil brussel sprouts? ›

Connie, yes Brussels sprouts can be boiled. But keep in mind that once they become tender in boiling water, they will also lose their bright green color. I also think they tend to get a bit mushy in texture. If you don't have a microwave, you can try steaming them on the stovetop instead.

How do you know when brussel sprouts are done steaming? ›

Place in a steamer basket. Place basket over simmering water. Steam for 6 minutes or until tender when pierced with a sharp knife.

Should you cut brussel sprouts in half before steaming? ›

Brussels sprouts are a great vegetable to cook on the stove. They take about 10 minutes to cook, and they are very healthy. First trim the Brussels sprouts. Then cut them in half and remove the stem.

Should I rinse Brussels sprouts? ›

Rinse under cold running water to remove any dust or dirt. Use a small knife to remove the sprout tip, and then remove any leaves that have bad spots. Raw: Slice thinly and toss with other shredded vegetables like cabbage, carrots, or beets.

Can you steam cook brussel sprouts? ›

Steamed sprouts

Steam halved sprouts in a steamer set over a pan of simmering water, or in a microwave for 5 mins (longer if needed). Season and dress with butter and a squeeze of orange if you like.

How do you know when sprouts are done? ›

The sprouts should have small leaves plus a curling, light green rootlet, anywhere from half an inch to a full inch. These sprouts will be ready to eat after 5-6 days when the first leaves are open and they are bright green.

Is it better to steam or pressure cook vegetables? ›

Steaming beat both methods, retaining more nutrients than boiling or pressure cooking, because the greens weren't dunked in water, which can leach out the nutrients.

Why do you soak brussel sprouts before cooking? ›

The soak time tenderizes the sprouts so the middles are softer. Don't worry, they won't be soggy! I would never do that to you. If, like me, you don't mind some chew to your sprouts, you don't need to soak the Brussels sprouts prior to cooking.

When should you not use brussel sprouts? ›

Throw out fresh brussel sprouts that have a foul odor, yellow or wilted leaves, a mushy or slimy texture, or dark spots. Use fresh brussel sprouts within 1–2 weeks of getting them. Store the brussel sprouts in a plastic bag inside your fridge, and wash them before cooking them.

When not to use brussel sprouts? ›

If any of the leaves have brown spots or are yellowing, it's a sign of early spoilage. If you remove the blemished leaves and the interior looks OK, you can still use the sprout. However, if the interior leaves are also showing blemishes or yellowing, it's best to toss it (or compost it, if you can).
